mastering the machine

Oy, I cannot, for the life of me, get the 7D to love me as much as I love it. There’s something I’m missing in handling the camera. Some technical deficiency that I need to overcome. I think a huge part of the problem is lack of practice, and I desperately need to change that. I find that I was much more comfortable with my analog Pentax and my Rebel XTi, naturally, and more successful at banging out pretty good shots on the regular. But, but, but I’m growing, so, 7D, you and I must be friends.
For one, I’m having a hard time working on the fly. I’ve not yet figured out what conditions require what combinations of settings, and how to make adjustments quickly. However, I am proud that I’m experimenting much more. I have always really favored using Av, but now I’m learning how to use the other values to get similarly successful shots. It’s all trial and error right now, except for the things I’m trying to learn from reading a digital field guide, a thoughtful gift from one of my photo-heroes, Kris Mendoza. In the end, I think reading the guide is moot if I’m not also out there making pictures.
So, another goal for spring and summer: bring your 7D with you. Everywhere. And just play. (And look good while doing it.)
I think I’ll get better.
